For several weeks, we have been prayer walking The Trails of Oak Creek asking God to love on the families of this neighborhood. We also met with the manager of the apartment complex to share our desire to love the people in the community and received her support. Then on Saturday, June 3, Discover Point celebrated DISCOVER FUN for the first time wth the families who live there. We will be headed back on July 8 and August 12.
It was an amazing day. The children and parents seemed "to come out of the woodwork" (as one of our guys said). We gave away snow cones and ice waters. We played kickball, basketball, soccer, corn hole and other games. There were crafts and sidewalk chalk. The children and the parents had a great time just playing games with us. Later we invited them to join us for a story about God's love for them and a prayer. And as we were getting ready to clean up, we also prayed for Emily Gass as her team is off for three Bible Bowl tournaments and a run at a repeat National Championship. The cool thing, the kids joined us to pray for her too!
Our goal is to establish a relational beachhead in this neighborhood for potential breakthrough of the kingdom of God. Discover Fun is not just about this summer, it extends into a long term relationship with the community of The Trails of Oak Creek. It is a safe environment where relationships can be created that lead to opportunities for us to be the good news and share the good news.
As we move into the fall, these relationships will continue to grow. The elementary school where these children attend has invited us to provide an after school program and to consider using their facilities to teach English as a second language to the parents and other adults in the community.
We are excited to see what God is doing and how we get to be a part of it!
